Manuc Bei mansion in Hincesti, Moldova

One day · Hincesti · Besalma · Comrat

South, to a people with its own capital.

Manuc Bey Palace, Besalma, Comrat. Eight and a bit hours, 240 km, a corner of Moldova most visitors miss.

We start with the mansion an Armenian merchant and diplomat built for himself in the 19th century, then drive south into Gagauzia, the autonomous region in southern Moldova. A museum founded by an artist, a lunch with Balkan and Turkish accents, and a walk through Comrat, the political and cultural center of the Gagauz people.

Why this day

Why go south and not north.

This day goes south instead of north, into the autonomous region where lunch carries Balkan and Turkish accents and the museum of the people was founded by one of their own artists. Between a palace built for an Armenian merchant and diplomat and a walk through Comrat, you get two very different layers of southern Moldova in one day.
