Across the border, into the city the Black Sea built. Morning departure, dinner at home.
Twelve hours, two countries, one Black Sea. Chișinău to Odesa is closer than most maps make it look, three and a half hours of driving and one border. I handle the paperwork, the route, the timing. You get the city: opera house, catacombs, the rooftop view, lunch at a place that's been open since before the war.

The day, hour by hour
Twelve hours, two countries, one Black Sea.
Pickup at your hotel
You finish your coffee, I load the bags. We have two coffee runs along the way.
To Palanca border · 100 km southeast
The drive south, through villages I know. I'll tell you what changes when you cross between Moldova and what the Russian Empire used to call New Russia.
Palanca border crossing · 30 to 60 minutes
I have all the paperwork ready. You stay in the car or stretch your legs. It's a small crossing, usually quiet.
Approaching Odesa · 80 km east
We drive into the city through the avenue Lev Tolstoy is said to have walked. I'll point out the old neighborhoods.
Central Odesa · walking tour
We park central, walk from there. Opera and Ballet Theater (the building Catherine the Great approved), Potemkin Stairs, Deribasovskaya, the Cathedral square. About 90 minutes on foot.
Lunch at a local classic
I have three restaurants I rotate through. All Odesan, all family-run. I order. You eat.
Your choice: Catacombs or sea
Option A: Nerubaiske Catacombs Museum. Underground tunnels used by Soviet partisans in WWII, now a memorial. Cold, atmospheric, unforgettable.
Option B: White Beach on the Black Sea. A quiet stretch outside the city. Walk on sand, look at the water.
Rooftop coffee
A bar above the city. You see the harbor and the old town from up there.
Back to the road
Last stop is sunset on the way out. I make sure we don't miss it.
Palanca border · back into Moldova
Usually faster on return.
Drop-off at your hotel
You're home for dinner if you didn't have a late lunch.
Why this day
Two countries, one day, you in the middle.
Odesa is half an hour past the Moldovan border but it might as well be another world: Black Sea, French and Greek architecture, Soviet catacombs, a port that's been the Black Sea capital since Catherine the Great. Most travelers think Odesa requires a separate trip. It doesn't. We leave at seven, we're back for dinner. You see the city the way someone who knows where to go sees it.
What guests say about this day
Travelers who took this exact tour.
"Thanks to Corneliu, my wife and I were able to spend an exceptional day in Odesa from Chișinău. Our guide knows the border crossing how-to's, Odesa inside and out, the city's landmarks thanks to a well-designed tour: the city's historical wonders, the White Beach on the Black Sea, a traditional historic restaurant, and a relaxing break on that rooftop hovering the city."
"We felt safe and secure for the entire trip. Corneliu was an expert guide and took advantage of the journey to Odesa to explain the fascinating history of the region. Five hours in town, all the highlights, with one or two 'local surprises' thrown in."
"A great tour guide, very personable. I took a day trip with him to Odesa. He knew the place inside and out and did a fantastic job."
"I'm a solo female traveler from Canada and I had a wonderful private day trip to Odesa from Chișinău with Corneliu. He was very responsive, punctual, and attentive."
