Odesa Opera House, aerial view

One day · Chișinău to Odesa to Chișinău

One day in Odesa.

Across the border, into the city the Black Sea built. Morning departure, dinner at home.

Twelve hours, two countries, one Black Sea. Chișinău to Odesa is closer than most maps make it look, three and a half hours of driving and one border. I handle the paperwork, the route, the timing. You get the city: opera house, catacombs, the rooftop view, lunch at a place that's been open since before the war.

Why this day

Two countries, one day, you in the middle.

Odesa is half an hour past the Moldovan border but it might as well be another world: Black Sea, French and Greek architecture, Soviet catacombs, a port that's been the Black Sea capital since Catherine the Great. Most travelers think Odesa requires a separate trip. It doesn't. We leave at seven, we're back for dinner. You see the city the way someone who knows where to go sees it.

Practical bits

Questions guests usually ask.

Is Odesa safe?
Yes, with normal travel caution. The city is open, the port still works, restaurants are full. Air-raid alerts happen but are rare and predictable. I monitor the situation hourly. If safety drops below my threshold on the day, we reschedule or switch to a Moldova-side tour at no extra cost.
Border crossing, what do I need?
Just your passport. If you're an EU, US, UK, or Canadian citizen, no visa needed for Ukraine. I bring all car paperwork. Non-standard passports, send me a photo before booking and I'll check.
How long is the border?
Palanca crossing is small. Usually 30 to 60 minutes total (both sides). On busy summer weekends it can stretch to 2 hours, I plan around it.
Insurance?
Included. My vehicle has Ukraine coverage and I have personal liability for guiding. You're covered.
Can I stay overnight in Odesa?
I don't run overnight Odesa tours, too much variability. If you want longer time in the east, we do Transnistria for 1 to 3 days instead, more depth and less travel time.
Languages in Odesa?
Russian and Ukrainian both work in the city. I speak Russian fluently and can communicate enough Ukrainian. Between us we use English, German, Romanian, whatever you prefer.
Group size?
1 to 4 in Prius+, 5 to 8 in Vivaro van. Same total price per vehicle either way.
Children?
Welcome. Child seats included on request. The Catacombs option may be too cold or claustrophobic for kids under 8, White Beach is the better choice with small children.
Cancellation
Free cancellation 48 hours before. Within 48 hours, 50%. Day-of, no refund except emergencies. If I cancel for safety reasons, full refund or full rebooking.
